Reading vs ReReading

One of the things I'm becoming concerned about as I age is not having enough time to read all the books i currently would like to get through. To be honest, I'm no longer sure I have enough time to get through all the books I own, much less all the ones I don't own but are still on my to-read list.

This becomes increasingly frustrating when I consider books that I might want to re-read. Because, in the grand scheme of things, that just seems like wasted time.

You've already read those damn books, my brain says to me. Been there. Done that. MOVE ON.

For the last few years I've been tempted to revisit some of the works of Peter Straub. Partly because I recall his book Shadowland being one of my favourites. Partly because I remember loving Ghost Story but remember almost nothing from it. Partly because I'd like to revisit his Blue Rose Trilogy (Koko, Mystery, and The Throat) as an older, smarter human being.

So there's plenty of reasons that I want to. But it still comes down to the one basic reason not to -- NOT ENOUGH TIME.

At the rate that I'm reading books these days, I'd probably have set aside a whole year just to pull something like that off. And if I was going to do it, I'd want to go all in -- read his entire library from start to finish, including the few titles that I haven't picked up yet (some of his earliest as well as his latest). I suppose it's possible that including those unread titles might make the process more appealing to me. But I just don't know.

I tried discussing this problem with my parents who have, of course, no sympathy at all because they're facing the exact same problem, only with fewer years left to them. Which, okay, fair enough mom and dad, you've got me there.

For now, I think I'll keep plugging along with my plans for 2016 (which includes first time visits into both To Kill a Mockingbird and Valley of the Dolls) and hope that I either find the time to read more often or manage to shake off this compulsion to revisit the past.

Because I'm not getting any younger.
