My Monday hero is Natalie Portman, an actress, film producer and film director who was born in Jerusalem, Israel in 1981. When she was three years old, the family moved to the United States. Portman holds dual citizenship of the United States and Israel.
At the age of 13, she landed the role of Mathilda on Léon: The Professional that launched her career. For her role in the 2004 drama Closer, Portman won a Golden Globe. She accepted the Saturn Award for Best Actress for her role in the political thriller V for Vendetta, and played in numerous films including the Star Wars prequel trilogy. For her work on the psychological horror film Black Swan, she earned her first Academy Award for Best Actress, Golden Globe Award, the SAG Award, the BAFTA Award and the BFCA Award.
In 2008, she directed a segment of the collective film New York, I Love You. Her first feature film as a director, A Tale of Love and Darkness, was a drama based on an autobiographical novel by Amos Oz an Israeli author and journalist.
Portman is a Harvard University graduate with an Artium Baccalaureus (A.B.) degree in psychology. When she was asked by the New York Post if college gets in the way of her career, she said: "I don't care if college ruins my career, I'd rather be smart than a movie star."
In the spring of 2004, Portman returned to Israel and took graduate courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Two years later she was a guest lecturer at a Columbia University course in terrorism and counterterrorism, where she spoke about her film V for Vendetta.
Portman is an advocate for animal rights and environmental causes. Additionally, she supports antipoverty activities in developing countries. She is married to ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied, their son Aleph Portman-Millepied was born in 2011. Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
I have followed NataliePortman.com’s career throughout the years, and watched her become this poised woman who always knows where she came from and where she wants to go. Both her professional and personal choices demonstrate intelligent, strong, balanced, well-rounded personality, who keeps her priorities straight.
During the 15 years since my first move to the United States, I have struggled to maintain my ambition. I had to act in the moment while simultaneously maintaining a vision for the future— a hard thing to do during a grueling high-skilled immigration process. Yet, I always believed in my ability to rise above the circumstances, and followed my intuition and values.
