My Monday hero is Eren Ozmen the President of Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) who was born in Turkey and came to the United States to pursue higher education in 1980, with limited English skills and scarce financial resources.
In 1985, Ozmen earned her master’s degree in business from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and joined Sierra Nevada Corporation in 1988. Six years later, together with her husband, Faith Ozmen, she acquired Sierra Nevada Corporation and made it the biggest female-owned federal contractor in the U.S., with $1.5 billion in sales.
Sierra Nevada Corporation Space Systems is an electronic systems provider and systems integrator specializing in microsatellites, telemedicine, and commercial orbital transportation services. Its workforce of nearly 3,000 personnel includes mostly scientists and engineers who operate in 33 locations in 18 U.S. states, England, Germany and Turkey.
The company contracts with the US military, NASA and private spaceflight companies. SNC is also responsible for the development of Dream Chaser®, the next generation orbital spacecraft.
In 2014, Eren and Fatih Ozmen donated $5 million to the University of Nevada, Reno to create a permanent center for entrepreneurship at the university’s college of business. (Read: http://www.unr.edu/nevada-today/news/...)
In addition to her role as an influential businesswoman, Eren places a priority on maintaining a healthy work-life balance, promoting family-friendly policies in the corporate culture of SNC.
