“I realized that in life you can only regret something you did, not something you hadn’t done. I took regret into consideration and decided I could live with disappointment, but I could not live with defeat”—The Opposite of Comfortable.
Celebrating Fridays until my May 17th book release with quotes from my book, and today’s quote is from Chapter 18, The End of an Era.
At the end of my husband’s two years fellowship in organ transplantation at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC, we returned to Israel.
However, everything has changed. During the next six years we have come to realize that the future we wish we had was in the United States.
There is never one reason for leaving your native land and adopting a new country. A person's self-concept is derived from the environment, culture, norms and values one is raised by, and the decision to leave portions of your identity behind and adopt a new one is complex. I think that given an alternative in their native land, most immigrants likely would have chosen to stay.
Legal immigration to the United States is divided into four categories: family ties, employment, refugee and asylum, and diversity program, and we’ve matched none. We were only two highly-skilled professionals who were able to inject valuable skills into the United States economy and actively contribute to the society, and we received a J-1 non-immigrant visa that does not offer a path to citizenship.
Yet, I was determined to try, because as quoted above “I could live with disappointment, but I could not live with defeat.” For me, it was tolerable to try and fail; however, giving up without making an attempt to succeed was considered an unjustified surrender.
We immigrated to the United States in June of 2009. I already knew it was not going to be easy, but I never expected to encounter such a dysfunctional immigration system, which suppresses the benefits it was initially designed to yield.
