On the Road Again
It's that time again--my next book tour. So I've spent some time trying to figure out what books to bring along, and on what stints to bring them. I've got a nice line-up, consisting of the following:
--The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,
by Mary Ann Shaffer, with the posthumous assistance of her niece, Annie Barrows. I've always been curious about the book, but now my wife is making me read it.
--A High Wind in Jamaica, by Richard Hughes.
--And three more of Irish writer Declan Hughes' mysteries. I mentioned in an earlier post how much I liked his City of Lost Girls, featuring his Irish private-eye, Ed Loy. And I believe in reading writers as well as books. So, I'll be bringing as well: The Color of Blood; All the Dead Voices; and The Price of Blood.
And hey, if anyone's interested, I'll be on NPR's Fresh Air May 9, the night before my new book (In the Garden of Beasts) comes out. Terry Gross is an amazing interviewer. At this point, frankly, I think she may know as much about the book as I do.

I cannot wait to read your book. After reading "Devil..", "Thunderstruck" and Isaac's Storm" I will read anything you write. You give such great insight to your subjects and write in such a way that the history and the people come alive. Thank you and please keep finding fascinating things to write about!

I have not read Isaac's Storm, yet, but have read Thunderstruck and LOVED Devil in the White City! I've already purchased the new book for my Nook, and can't wait to get it tomorrow! : )
I got an ARC of your book through goodreads.com and finished a couple days ago. I just posted a review. How difficult it must have been to research that period in Germany!You're coming to Livonia, Michigan in a couple/few days, and I feel so bad that I won't be there! I've read books by all but one of the authors who will be there (three by you). I live about an hour away from Livonia. I'd skip work that day to go, but it's not a free event, far from it.
I think you'll be disappointed in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I was.

Erik, I have read The Devil in the White City, which is one of my all-time favorite books, and Thunderstruck. I'm now reading In the Garden of Beasts, which I've been eagerly awaiting. I want to read Isaac's Storm, but I now read most books in eBook format, and it's not available yet. If there is anything you can do to get it published in eBook format, that would be wonderful! Keep up the good work!
I was lucky to receive the ARC and was unable to put down "In the Garden of Beasts". Being British, WWII, is near and dear to my "history" heart and this was a fabulous book that looked at how the world let events unfold.I will write a review soon, but I wanted to thank you for such vivid images - it invoked the cinema of Cabaret and Valkyrie while I was reading it.
Please continue to write such fascinating books about difficult topics....
If you haven't yet, I suggest taking "Everything Is Illuminated" along with you. The way Jonathan Safran Foer is able to weave his words together creates a whole new dream world. It's a different style of writing than you but I get lost in it the way I do with your books.Hopefully I'll catch up with you and see you speak on your tour!
What a lovely memory to see High Wind in Jamacia. We all read it as kids, along with Catcher in the Rye, A Separate Peace. Now, I must go read it again, because the truth is that I've forgotten every word of it! Good luck on your tour, Erik.
I am getting ready to read Thunderstruck. I read the intro chapters for the new book and it is great and I'll be getting a copy soon so I can finish. As for "The Gurnsey Literary Potato Peel Society", your wife is right, it is a great read. Another good book I am reading is "A Secret Gift" by Ted Gup, it's about the depression.

Just picked up In the Garden of Beasts from the library. Loved Isaac's Storm! I live in SC and we are hurricane prone. Felt like I was living through Isaac's Storm. I always recommend your books. Your research is phenomenal. Sue
I'm thrilled to see you have a new book out. I've been selling books the past few years and "Devil in the White City" is the book I've sold the most. Whenever a customer is looking for a gift for a serious reader, it's my 'go to' book. I'm already looking forward to your next book.
Finished your latest book recently. Very interesting expose of the American mind prior to WWII. Sometimes it is hard to view someone like Hitler without the filter of history. Of course, we know he was evil but before the war, it wasn't so cut and dry in many people's minds. Good job laying it out for us.
