Picture Perfect

When I first started learning how to promote myself as an author I was told I need book teasers. Huh? What? were my responses since I had no idea how to create one of those or what quotes to choose from my book so I started researching other authors' creations and asked my agent for advice. There are several websites and apps that allow you to create Facebook banners, teasers and designs for free. But first do NOT make the mistake I did by taking images from Google. Hello, copyright. There are lots of websites that are great for stock photos that can express what you want the photo to say such as DreamTime, Shutterstock, iStock, Big Stock Photo, etc. These photos cost just a few dollars and you can keep and use them for years for various novels. My favorite design website is Canva. Canva has their own photos you can purchase, usually only for $1. And it's professional-looking photography and design! They're my go-to website for creating book teasers. If you're into apps Pic Collage, Moldiv, Pic Stich and so many more work great for just a quote or a photo collage with a quote in front. Once you have your photos paid for or perhaps you're using your novel's cover, now it's time to pick the right quote to go with the photo. You don't want a sinister quote (suspense) with a light and airy photo. Make sure the picture matches the tone of the quote. If it's a romantic picture, find a quote between your couple that makes the audience want to read more. You also want to make sure it's not too long. Make sure you include your name, book title and release, if not in the teaser then in the post on the social media platforms you put it on. If you can, include the link to the book so the viewers don't have to track it down. You want them to have access to where to purchase your book as much as possible. You final product will vary author to author--make sure it's your style and fits your writing personality. Take a look at mine below using canva.com and feel free to comment on how you make your book teasers!
