I'm really fond of my Kindle Paperwhite, though it wouldn't be great for Codices, etc.

Getting the epub3 Codex format to work on dedicated eReader devices is tricky if not impossible. I still don't know what BL were thinking adopting epub3 when the market hasn't really caught up with it yet. Great format, little support.More recent Android tablets or the iPad should have access to apps and hardware resources to handle them properly, but then their displays aren't as great for reading as the aforementioned Kindle Paperwhite or similar.
I believe there is a new Kindle on the horizon already, so maybe that'd be worth holding off on. If I remember correctly, Amazon even planned to provide "free" wifi wherever you are with the pricier model of it, which might come in handy on future camping trips.
Either way, Kindle models should have nice comparison charts on Amazon, so you can figure out which things you want out of the thing.
I'm due for an update soon myself, since I'm still using an old 2nd gen Kindle Fire (non-HD and struggles with games beyond Sudoku or Tetris...). I dread the choice of model already.
