Marked by Scorn: An Anthology Featuring Non-Traditional Relationships

I want to talk, a little, about my forthcoming short story.

Brown, who review this collection*, pointed out that ‘…“Roulez” uses the pronoun “they” in relation to the story’s gender non-binary protagonist.’ It does! This is true. Beau, the character in question, has an identity that is neither male or female—and their presentation is also neither male nor female, something that is both joyful and painful by turns. Living in the world is hard when you don’t clearly flag your gender, but it also brings you in contact with other people who value, and look for, that very lack of flagging.

This is a story, and a set of characters, that I didn’t think would find a home. For a long time I wrote about Beau—Beauregard—and Kath purely for my own pleasure, because the market for stories about trans and intersex characters didn’t seem like a very big one. I know a lot about their lives, and I love them very dearly, and when I finished Roulez and, later, the working-titled, same-universe, as-yet-unpublished Cousin/e, I thought, okay, these are never going to have a place, but that’s fine because I’m proud of them.

When it came to Roulez, at least, I was wrong, and I couldn’t be happier. Dominica, who’s been a great editor, called it ‘one of my personal favorites’,** and I couldn’t be happier about that, either. (And yo, check out the descriptions of some of those other pieces! I’m so excited to read them.)

I’d love it if you checked out the IndieGoGo for the anthology. This is a book entirely about nontraditional relationships. If you are queer, trans, poly, intersex, disabled, a person of color, or any and all of the above, this is for you. This is for us.

As the IndiGoGo says, “Solarwyrm Press has been publishing books - primarily anthologies - since 2013. We regularly use crowdfunding to fund our books, and have been 100% successful every time.”

The campaign only has about five hours less—but I figured, it couldn't hurt, you know? To ask. It's located at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ma....

If diversity in publishing matters to you, please consider backing the project. The perks are cool, and if you send me a message showing you’ve contributed, I will write you something too!
