My Monday hero is Elena Pirozhkova a wrestler for the United States Olympic team, who was born in Novokuznetsk, Russia. Her parents fled the country in 1989, and immigrated to the United States when she was 3 years old, eventually settling in Massachusetts.
On her website, Elena writes she grew up in a tight knit, loving family.She and her siblings were taught the importance of sacrifice and completing sometimes difficult tasks in timely fashion. In addition to the daily household’s chores she worked outside the house to help financially support the family.
When she was twelve, her older brother Viktor convinced her to join his wrestling team, which had a vacant spot in the 112-pound weight class. At first, she didn’t like wrestling, but then she began winning matches against male opponents and shaped a career for herself in the sport.
Over the years, Elena became one of the most consistent and decorated women wrestlers in USA history. She won the gold medal at the Pan American games in 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2010, she won the silver medal at the World Championship games. She placed 5th at the 2011 World Championships.
She also won a world title in 2012, and competed at the London Olympics, but lost her first match.
Pirozhkova is on her way to the Rio 2016 Olympics, and may wrestle her way into history as no other USA female wrestler has ever won a gold medal in the Olympic Games.
When a person’s upbringing is based on values and principals such as persistence, perseverance, dedication, and devotion there is almost nothing impossible.
