May already?

Where did April go?

I had hoped to get more writing done on Staying In and Getting Out, but real life interrupted. First, my day job was fairly demanding in April with a record amount of work. Then I took spring break off with my son, but had to rush back home when the bombings occurred here in Boston. The month flew by, and here it is, May. And May is another busy month for me, so it looks like any serious work on my follow-up novellas will have to wait until June when my workload diminishes greatly.

I've also found myself in a bit of a pickle. This happens to me quite a bit when I decide upon a course of action. It seems that the universe tries to throw me a curve ball to see how I'll react. In this case, several months ago I decided I wanted to start writing fiction again, and this time enjoy the process. My goal is to get out of journalism (and teaching journalism, which I also do) and earn my living writing nonfiction and fiction through self-publishing.

Then, without going into a lot of detail, an "opportunity" landed in my lap that could make me a great deal of money IF I stick with the journalism and teaching. The problem is I can't really do both, meaning write fiction and develop the money-making venture. I know my limitations of energy and passion, and frankly, I'm not passionate about the money-making venture. Of course I love making money, but in this case I'm not completely sold on the "how" of making that money ... it feels a bit inauthentic to me, if that makes any sense. I'm an INFP in Myers-Briggs parlance, and I become deeply uncomfortable when my personal values are threatened even a tiny bit.

I talked to my husband about all this last night and he urged me to stick to my course, to continue my fiction writing and forget about the money-making opportunity, which he knows will just make me unhappy and crazy. My husband is a pretty amazing guy! I'm so lucky to be married to a man who understands how I tick and doesn't pressure me to do work that run against my grain. Of course like most husbands, he does drive me crazy a lot of the time, but I, too, am guilty of driving him nuts ... on occasion. On top of this, he has zero idea of the type of fiction I've been writing, LOL. He'd be pretty shocked! ;-)

So bear with me this month. I don't think it'll be as busy as April was, and I will do my best to get more done on part two of Amanda's story.

p.s. Getting In is getting some good reviews on Goodreads ... one reader said she even had to take a cold shower after reading it, which totally made my day.
