Why we ask why

This past weekend the world watched while fifty innocent lives were robbed from the world and another fifty people will always wonder how they made it out alive.

As soon as the shooting in Orlando ended, people immediately searched for answers as to why yet another tragedy has occurred. Was it terrorism, homophobia, or just some deranged psychopath hell bent on destruction?

We needed to know so we can make sense of it all and somehow feel better because if we could exclude ourselves from whatever group is targeted, maybe we will be just a tad more safe.

Ban guns . . . Don't ban guns. Ban Muslims . . . Don't ban Muslims. Repeal gay marriage. . . Don't repeal gay marriage. Before all the bodies were removed from Pulse, people were already huddling up into whatever corner they believed in.

We hit social media soon after, gathering our like minded troops so together we can gang up on people we don't agree with. We feel better. We've made sense of the something which our feeble minds can't grasp . . . Hatred.

The truth is we don't need to know why someone does these senseless acts. The police and FBI need to know, but we as a people need to look into ourselves and ask bigger questions.

The question we need to ask is what is wrong with us as a species? We are all human, no matter what sub group we identify with.

From gang killings, Middle East suicide bombers, husbands killing their wives, to people shooting up night clubs or schools. The reasons are plenty and usually an excuse to mask the human condition.

Maybe as humans we have an unquenchable blood lust. Our history is littered with violence and destruction leading all the way back to biblical times.

So we can continue to try and figure out why this group does this or that or we can look deeper and figure out what the hell is wrong with us as a species.

It's ugly to think about because it brings us closer to these monsters who are capable of the unthinkable. It makes us fear that maybe there is something in us that can snap and find ourselves strapped to the gills with guns.

To us, these people aren't human, but convincing ourselves of that does their victims a disservice. They are human and so are we. We need to look into ourselves and isolate that one thing, whatever it is that allows us to do theses heinous acts as the human race, and zap that part out of us. If we don't, we will continue to see this kind of destruction over and over again, until nothing is left.
