We had heard of Polaris, of Andromeda, of Cassiopeia; their success assured regardless of behaviour. Their light, too bright to bear, too brilliant to ignore, a shield against accusations.

For others it was harder, no worshippers to explain away the bodies.

I found Cor Caroli in a high security wing, behind smoked glass, ahead of the trial.

“Why?”

The light dimmed a little.

“We are but mirrors to the heart.”
