The first thing I read by Louise Erdrich was Love Medicine and I was awed by the interior imagery. Later, when I was writing about Native Americans myself, I went back to Love Medicine and saw more.
Now I'm about 3/4ers through LaRose by Erdrich. This book has already received deserved acclaim. There is more than one way to read LaRose: fast for the basic story, or slow for thecomplex layers of emotion and motive that are so difficult to get right. When in this arena Louise is on it, and I am still awed by her use of imagery to mine our true and imaginary selves.
More later . . .
