This is the first book in the Holy Christian Empire series (so named, with tongue in cheek, after the "Holy Roman Empire"). The series is not overtly "religious", but the Empire is indeed Christian and often fights with other, non-Christian, entities including a cult and a radical Islamic empire. No geeky aliens, just humans descended from Earth.
