The Ranger by
Ace AtkinsMy rating:
4 of 5 starsWith THE RANGER Ace Atkins again shows his range as a writer. I was first introduced to Atkins by his Nick Travers series. Loved those books. Then came historically-based novels such as WHITE SHADOW. Didn't love them as much, but that's more to my taste for contemporary stories versus stories from the past. Elmore Leonard, one of my faves, is on record heralding Atkins's work. Say no more. Now, with THE RANGER, Atkins launches a new series that, in my mind at least, shares space with Lee Child's Reacher novels and John Hart's DOWN RIVER. Quinn Colson, Atkins's creation, is every bit as devastating and intelligent as Reacher (okay maybe not quite as so) and the setting as evocatve as Hart's in his Edgar-winning DOWN RIVER. I hate to rehash plots in reviews, so I won't. Just know this: Atkins is one of the very best crime writers working today. If you haven't given him a try, it's not too late. Start now. Then go back and read those fantastic Nick Travers books next.
