My post
Beautiful People,
It is the end of an era. Today, the state of Israel lost the last link to its founding fathers. Shimon Peres שמעון פרס, the former prime minister and president, has been present by Israel’s side even before it was born. He had first-hand witnessed and repeatedly participated, visibly or discreetly, in every defining moment in my native country’s history.
Growing up in Israel, I had recognized Shimon Peres as a politician. But in 1987, after he signed the London Agreement, which outlined a framework for a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict that would focus on education and the development of the two countries’ respective economies, I started realizing that Shimon Peres was much more than an office-bearer. I was 17, full with hopes for peace and coexistence.
In 1993, against all odds, strong political opposition, and social turmoil he negotiated the Oslo Peace Accords, which marked the start of a peace process that was aimed at achieving a peace-treaty between Israel and the Palestinians. I was 23, still full with hopes for peace and an activist for the newly founded Meretz מרצ, a left-wing, social-democratic political party.
In 1995, Shimon Peres stood tall and proud on the stage at the Kings of Israel Square in Tel Aviv right next to Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin, singing a Song for Peace, while attending a mass rally held in support of the Oslo Accords. Moments later Rabin was assassinated. A year later, I mourned peace, but Shimon Peres had not.
Shimon Peres, more than any other leader or citizen believed in the possibility of peace between Israel and the Arab world. He dedicated his life for peace. He had never, never, never given up. And it is very easy to lose hope in a place like the Middle East. But Shimon Peres, a founding father, was a beacon of resilience and faith.
Peres’ legacy carries on through The Peres Center For Peace, which he had founded in 1996. The organization is focused on promoting lasting peace and advancement in the Middle East by fostering tolerance, economic & technological development, innovation, cooperation & well-being, all in the spirit of President Shimon Peres.
Throughout the years, Shimon Peres shared so many words of wisdom. Yet one statement will stay with me forever, because it is a principal by which I live and hope to instill in my children so they can change the world-
Shimon Peres said: “WE NEED TO USE OUR IMAGINATION MORE THAN WE USE OUR MEMORY”
Magnificent Shimon Peres, it is your time to rest in peace.
