My Goodreads saviour!
His name is Shaun Ponting and he's the Goodreads expert who came to my rescue yesterday when I sent out a cry for help. My problem was very simple: I had joined Goodreads a month or so ago as a reader and now wanted to establish a page as an author because I'm told on excellent authority that a presence on Goodreads can be of enormous benefit to a published writer. Now, I'm not entirely stupid when it comes to things technical but I discovered I had several books credited to me that I hadn't written and, whatever I tried to do, I didn't seem able to correct the error. The problem is that I share a Welsh background and indeed a name with an eminent Art Historian who is also a Mari Griffith though her area of expertise is very different from mine. I'm afraid that when it comes to fine art, (though I cringe to admit it), I'm one of those irritating people who say 'I know what I like' - then clam up. I have very little appreciation of fine art, whereas the other Mari Griffith is an acknowledged expert who has published widely and often appears on high-profile radio and television programmes where art is the subject for discussion. So it didn't benefit either of us that our books were lumped together on this site. There was nothing for it but to throw myself on the mercy of the Goodreads experts and, lo and behold!, the saintly Shaun replied to my emailed query within half an hour. He identified the problem as a fault associated with ONIX (online information exchange) and corrected it immediately ... just like that! So, thank you, Shaun, I am deeply in your debt and, yes, you did provide me with a lovely subject for my very first blog post! Mari Griffith is duly grateful to you ... and I'm sure that Mari Griffith will be, too!
