OCD and Addiction

Addiction

I’m an addict. I have been as long as I can remember. My addictions vary. Sometimes, it’s not too terrifying. I was addicted to Angry Birds for a while. I had a beading (like jewelry) addiction for around a year. I become hooked on certain book genres and throw money at Amazon. When I was a new mom, I started playing the Sims, and I couldn’t stop. Hours upon hours were spent playing. There have been video poker addictions…thankfully, not with real money. It was after one long poker addictio...

Carol M Wendy -- you have achieved the wisdom of knowing that you are an Addict. As someone who TENDS to addict to things, I don't have nearly the struggle that you have faced. But I do have a method of dealing that TENDS to reduce the urge for me: I make sure to have BALANCED meals with a lot of vegetables. Now, I am a vegetarian, so that may sound a little odd, but I find that upping the vegetable intake and reducing sugar helps a lot. I do not have any disease requiring it, but I limit starches, too. For me, more salads, veggie rice bowls and natural foods helps a lot.
Good luck. (And I am glad you realize that there really is NO good addiction, it is all about balance.)

Wendy Sparrow How interesting! I'm actually shifting to vegetarian (with eggs, dairy, and seafood.) And I will admit that I've felt better in some ways but I hadn't linked it to that. That's fascinating. Thank you for mentioning this. I've always felt like diet plays a huge part in mental and physical wellness. What your body and mind are using for fuel would logically impact how they run.

Carol M Am vegetarian WITHOUT seafood. Try "nothing with a face", which means you don't eat potatoes if they are so old they have "eyes" (roots). [old, old joke] Good luck!

I need the Omega 3 Fatty Acids for my joints because I have so much joint erosion that I'll need both hips and knees replaced as well as possibly shoulder surgery. My other problem is that I'm mildly allergic to soy as well as some nuts and I'm lactose intolerant so I need the protein. So, I fit in the occasional salmon when I can. I still take vitamin supplements but my allergies knock out a few really good sources for various nutrients.

Carol M I don't like to eat fish, so I am safe -- but you have to take the B vitamin pills AND I have taken fish oil -- but don't any more. Sorry to hear about your allergies. But I think there is a close tie between food allergies and OCD and a few other illnesses. If I were a doctor, think I would be looking in to those ties!!!
