"You've got to have a bit of empathy as well"
Not words you'd normally associate with rugby. They come from Nigel Owens, who is about to referee the Rugby World Cup Final, on why just applying the laws to the letter doesn't produce a good match.
Now here's a contradiction.
When I'm teaching about mindfulness, I tell people that 'just' is one of the best words in the language - when you're doing something, just do it, without your mind wandering off elsewhere. So, a referee not just applying the rules?
It's all about, what are you really doing? Are you adjudicating between two teams, or are you facilitating a good contest? Are you trying to make sure no-one deviates from your instructions, or are you co-ordinating for a good result for the team?
It comes down to what you're focusing on. Like standing on one leg putting a sock on the other foot - if you're concentrating on getting the sock on, you'll likely fall over, but if you focus on the foot on the floor and staying upright, you'll get the sock on and keep your balance. Try it.
I'm not Australian or a New Zealander. I'm English and we were knocked out long since, so I'll be cheering for the Welsh referee on Saturday. "Ewch ati, Nigel!"
