Creating Characters with Heart Without Over-Thinking

When I wrote "Horse Gone Silent", my primary intention was to give the book as a gift to a friend who's horse had passed away. The book was based on his life, and I wanted to give her a sweet ending to a horse that had given her and so many other people so much.
This was my first novel, and I wanted to give it everything that I had, but had limited expectations-I never expected it to be as successful as it is today! As I prepare it for release on "Audible", I have had to go back and really study my own work to help the producer of the audio book capture the essence of the characters that I created in the book. It turned out to be a very emotional process for me to go through. I didn't realize it when I had wrote the book, but there is a scene early when the main character is being "weaned" from his mother. It is a heart felt scene where the young colt and his mother recognize that they will never see each other again. The mother is trying desperately to communicate her last words ever to her son while he gallops frantically up and down the fence line trying to hear her voice. In retrospect, this scene reflected a time in my own life, when I had prematurely left my mother's side when she was passing away, and I was unable to say a proper good-bye to her. The hurt from that regret unintentionally showed up in the writing, but I only discovered it months later as I reviewed it for the Audible producer. I can't speak about what all writers think, and how they plan their work, but I can speak for myself. I do truly let all of my emotions out when I write, and I passionately apply every emotion I have to a character. Not because I think I should, but because it is what happens naturally. I can only hope it comes through and makes a difference in the readers' life.
