Dragons are coming!

In a world where dragons are predators and humans are prey, a greedy human king tries to destroy a family of dragons until Ragel must rise up to protect his brood.

My newest story is a middle-grade chapter book called Ragel's Brood which will be released on December 1st. The inspiration for it started with the question, "Why would an intelligent apex predator like a dragon allow its prey to ride around on its back?"

I've always loved fantasy novels, but that's always bugged me. So I decided to tell a hero's journey story from the point of view of a dragon. Human's aren't the heroes, they're the dragon's pet two-leg.

This book is told from the point of view of the father dragon who lives in a valley with his mate and their four rambunctious offspring. The other point-of-view comes from the evil King Thorn who covets the gold where the dragons live.

Dragons and humans don't share a common language. In fact, most dragons don't believe humans are more than we consider industrious bees or mice. And despite evidence to the contrary, King Thorn refuses to admit dragons are more than animals, albeit powerful ones.

This book allows kids 8-13 years-old to explore new points of view and consider what living as a dragon would be like. It is currently being assessed for its Lexile level and how it could be included in future elementary school reading curriculum.

Writing on the Edges

A.L. Awtrey
Writing is not the center of my life, but it does a good job filling in the rough edges. I spend just enough time to take writing seriously, without taking myself too seriously as a writer.
