Shadowboxing With Bukowski is neither fiction nor memoir, but partly both; a blend of the two. The events take place in the mid-1980s, in San Pedro, California, L.A.'s harbor. I wrote the book hoping to capture the time and locale, the places and characters, in particular Charles Bukowski who was frequently around, and who was good enough to help us out when we needed it most.
While the book does contain elements of fiction it should be read as a memoir. Some of what takes place may appear outlandish or fantastic, and thus thought of as conjured by the imagination of the writer, but one would be hard-pressed to distinguish them from the events that actually did take place.
