Coming January 2017!
Something on her face must have given him a clue to her discomfort because he walked further away—just far enough that she could breathe easier, but not so far that he had to shout.
“You good?” He asked her carefully. His eyes were watchful on her face and his hands were carefully loose at his sides. He didn’t smile at her, perhaps knowing that this moment would be cheapened by one of his normal grins. And, that if he had grinned she probably never would have forgiven him for laughing in a moment too heavy with memories for laughter.
“Yeah.” Her answer was brusquer than she would have wanted it to be, but she hated when people had to act carefully. She hated the memories that created the need for careful. For the control that she needed to feel secure. She wanted to be the Winter that everyone knew—witty and sharp. Vulnerable messed up her street cred. So, she smiled and even as she smiled, she realized how practiced that smile was and that as much as she thought it hid everything its existence gave her away.
He didn’t remark on it. Winter was grateful for that since there wasn’t much that he would not remark on.
