Dealing with Feedback
As this is my first blog, I feel like addressing something important: Feedback. Positive or negative, useful or an outlet for hate, every member of the arts will get feedback and you should thrive off of it.
Since publishing, I've received anything from "I hated this book" to a message from a friend that blamed me for their inability to sleep (They loved it so much). The key is how to handle everything. I don't know about other authors, but this is my professional opinion.
If it's positive, but simple, like, "This was good," saying thank you is nice, but not always necessary. Sometimes, I just like to like something and move on. It shows my support without ties. Now, if someone rates it five stars and writes a lengthy review about what they loved? I might stop at thank you, or I might reply to something in there that I had a thought about. Either way, I make sure I take the time to read it and take everything in, because you never know where ideas will come from. While I will never write anything I don't want to, I do believe in taking a good suggestion and running with it.
Now, negative reviews will happen and they might hurt. I remember reading my first negative review on here, and on Amazon, and I stared at that lonely star for a minute and let it sink in that I couldn't make everyone happy. But I was okay with it, because, while they didn't enjoy it, maybe they had a laugh somewhere down the page, or maybe they hated everything and that's okay, too. I can't make people like my work, but even the negative reviews can be useful to read, because maybe there is a valid aspect that I need to take a look at. If there's nothing to take from it, I'm just glad they took the time to read my book and be honest, because that's all I can ask.
So, to anyone and everyone who reads books (Especially mine) and leaves a review or a comment, be it good or bad, thank you for taking that time and thank you again for the feedback. It's all useful, whether it's a suggestion, an idea, or just a drive to be better, every piece of feedback is appreciated.
I'm not used to blogs, but hopefully this was a good way to start out. I just wanted to write this and hopefully let you all know that your reviews do matter, so never hesitate to give feedback. Enough of me talking, though, get out there and read or write (Or both, if you can physically do that, in which case kudos).
