In answer to the question favorite couple in current fiction, I would say Ifemelu and Obineze, who can be found in Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The couple are luminously brought to light from the time they meet as high school sweethearts in Nigeria and then lead separate lives in America and Britain, and then find one another again in Nigeria after life has tempered and changed them, but not touched the spark that is a soul-binding. Adichie is a gifted, deep writer, with a superb social wit, and this book brings many worlds to life.
