Interview, pt. 1

I was interviewed last year about my first novel, The Chaperone. I thought I'd share it here, a few questions at a time because it's kind of long for this format, I think.

What inspired you to become a writer?
Writing is something I’ve always been interested in. I even wrote a short story for a contest once when I was young. It’s such a wonderful outlet for me. I have lots of ideas for other books!

Without giving away too much of your new book The Chaperone – the world is faced with a calamitous event – a huge solar storm. What inspired you to choose this topic?
I’ve been an amateur astronomer for most of my life. I’ve often read about solar activity in scientific journals. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try to raise awareness amongst the general public. The people have the power to apply pressure to Congress and power company executives to take action to protect us.

Many people feel helpless about the problems they face today, let alone the utter helplessness we would feel in regards to an issue like this with the sun. What other natural/environmental issues do you see as posing serious challenges for humans?
There are many things we as individuals can do to assist in overcoming environmental challenges we face. First of all, get educated on the facts. Second, do your part to make a difference. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive or difficult. You can participate in a litter cleanup, recycle, and conserve water and energy (ex. turn off lights you aren’t using). Advocate for issues that are important to you… write a letter or send an email to your representatives in Washington. They are supposed to be there for you. There are, unfortunately, a large number of environmental challenges we face, some of them with dangerous long-term consequences for humankind.

Describe the world you see in 100 years, given our current mix of geopolitical turmoil and growing environmental issues?
I believe in the potential of humanity for doing good. One hundred years from now, I see a peaceful world with most issues of environmental degradation, poverty, and injustice solved. That said, it is difficult to imagine what it would look like if you were standing there on a street corner. Technology is changing rapidly and innovation is booming. These are exciting times.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist? What about Cole?
I consider myself to be an optimistic person. Cole is also an optimist. She believes in helping others and doing what’s right. She trusts those around her and has faith in the future.
