Let's Get Comfortable

Ideal reading conditions:
I have an easy chair in a room full of books. It's set close to a window and catches the strong morning light. I usually have the first cup of tea there and read about ten pages, sunshine on my shoulders, feet on a leather ottoman.

Then I'm back in the late afternoon for the fourth and final cup of tea of the day. By then the sun has moved to the other side of the house, so I put the side lamp on, and if it's a little chilly, find a throw blanket for my knees. I try and read for an hour most days, before moving on to make dinner. That's my favorite reading. No phone. I plug it in where I can't even hear it buzzing. Corgi underfoot for his 4PM nap.

Runner ups: in the bath, before bed, on the porch in the summer.

Your turn.

Jyanx In the summer, in the hammock by the pond at my parents camp.

message 2: by Alison (new)

Alison Hardtmann My best reading time (often only reading time) is early in the morning before the house is awake and late at night after everyone is asleep. I'm usually located in bed, bolstered by an excessive number of pillows and acting as pillow for the cat.

During the day, I'm finding the car to be a pretty good location. I try to get in the line of cars full of parents waiting for their kids to emerge from school as early as I can. It makes my kids feel like I love them, but really it's the lovely, lovely silence and time.

message 3: by Deb (new)

Deb Early morning after my walk, sitting on a bench facing the lake, mountains in the background and a big cup of coffee sitting next to me and of course my book - perfect!

message 4: by Amy (new)

Amy Verkruissen Usually it's in bed at night with a pug under the blankets along side me and a cat trying to cut in on the action. Next best is when nobody is at home, no tv's are on and nothing but the sound of the ceiling fan droning in the background.

message 5: by Phil (new)

Phil I'm a coffee shop guy, as long as it's not too noisy or busy.

message 6: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Turner I have two toddlers so for me it's my office at six am (a couple of hours before they wake up) with a cup of coffee and my Pandora Skynyrd playlist playing quietly. Laid back in my rocking chair and the curtains open, letting in the soft, natural light. It's perfect. I love it.

If I get there early enough I can usually get 5 pages, minimum, before the school bell rings and the kid jumps in the car.

message 8: by Steve (new)

Steve TOP THREE:
3. Warm afternoons on the back deck
2. Local library in the old reading room. 19th century building with giant/ornate windows.
1. Bed, late at night when everyone is asleep.

message 9: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller Ideal: While on vacation, in a cabin in the mountains. I always read the most there.

Runner Ups:

- In bed after a long work-day, with everyone sleep; with blanky and pillows
- Rainy day over the weekend. Preferably in my woman-cave :)
- Right after book-shopping, anywhere.

message 10: by Allen (new)

Allen Huntsman I'll try to read a page or two throughout the day.
Then I read around ten or twenty pages before bed.

message 11: by Regina (new)

Regina My favourite is out on the back deck during those secret sunny Seattle days. Routinely though it's an hour in bed every night with my two cats while my husband is sleeping. Luckily I can fit audiobooks in during the two hours of commuting time during the weekdays as well.

message 12: by Phil (new)

Phil Just read some Locke & Key in a coffee shop! See?

message 13: by Jess ツ (new)

Jess ツ Before bed, every single day, in the dark silence of the night ...
In the summer, on a quilt laying on my backyard grass, my dog asking to throw a ball every few pages...For the fall, it's my couch with a quilt on my knees and the dog sleeping half on the couch , half on me ...and a hot mug of earl grey

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block The best is sitting in a comfortable spot along my favorite trout stream with the wind at my back and the water running over the rocks.

message 15: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Propped up in bed, with one cat in my lap and the other sleeping beside me.

message 16: by Hayley (new)

Hayley For me, it's kinda sad, but the best reading I got done was when I took the bus to work. An uninterrupted 30 minutes each way where I could just shut the world out. It's a tad bit harder trying to read and walk, considering it does significantly diminish your traffic dodging skills.

message 17: by Laura (new)

Laura I love reading outdoors when weather permits. In the summer, I often go find a sunny spot outdoors and read with my westie.

I also like reading at pubs and on patios.

message 18: by Sean (new)

Sean Seebach Mostly before bed.
But, Preferably on the couch with a blanket and my knees propped against the book for ideal eye level.
I like to do 14 pages in the morning, before the work, then, if I can, another 16 pages before dinner, daily.
Summer and Spring, windows open, warm breeze, woodsy scented candles in my office with my feet propped on my desk and the desk chair reclined, at 4-5pm.
There's something about that time slot that puts me in an absorbing, more imaginable space. Call it mood.

message 19: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad I read in the early mornings, mid morning, mid afternoon and than even more at night when everyone has gone to bed. If the book is really good I tend to find myself reading well into the night sitting in my comfortable chair with just a desk lamp on and the sound of mother nature outside. I just finished The Fireman and I was so engrossed with this story I could not put it down and felt sad when it was over. Great job on the book.

message 20: by Karen (new)

Karen My reading places vary: sometimes, it's just my recliner. In the summer, I go out on the deck and read at the table underneath the umbrella. I read in the waiting room of whichever doctor I'm seeing. And my husband can tell you that I tend to spend lots of time in the bathroom...!!!

message 21: by The Headless (new)

The Headless Horror On the couch, surrounded by my dogs, drinking a cup of tea right before bedtime!

message 22: by Grace (new)

Grace Probably in bed in the morning/before bed. Anytime I try making tea and reading I just forget about it then I have a pot of overly strong and cold tea.
Unfortunately most of my reading is on the subway getting bumped by people.

message 23: by John (new)

John I have a 1.5 hour commute to work on the subway and bus, so most of my reading is done on public transportation. Is it the calmest place in the world to read? Nah, but it does make my commute a lot less miserable!

Unsolved ☕︎ Mystery My absolute most favorite place to read is my couch. I usually have a cat or 3 on my lap or sitting beside me.
I'm either drinking a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

The TV is off. Silence fills the house. The neighborhood is quiet (I want peace and quiet, ya blasted kids!)

There is rumbling thunder in the distance. The sky is overcast. The storm isn't that far away, getting closer.

To me, That is where I want to be right now. Absolute perfection.
I really like yours too.

message 25: by Diane (new)

Diane I'll read just about anywhere, but my favorite place tends to be in bed before going to sleep. I have to keep an eye on the time though. I've been after 1am putting down a good book!

message 26: by Chris (new)

Chris I am lucky enough to get a 30 minute break at work 5 out of 7 days....... and I spend it with fruit, coffee and my Kindle! I also squeeze in at LEAST 5 minutes EVERY night before going to bed on the second current read. As soon as I finish one (the night book or Kindle book) I start another. ALWAYS reading 2 books at a time!

message 27: by Daryl (new)

Daryl Palmer I read at my desk every night for, at least, 30 minutes. If I really like the book I'll extend that time frame.

message 28: by Leanne (new)

Leanne Yep....right with you, mister. In the morning with the Today show in the background, gas fireplace going to cut the chill, cuppa chai, comfy chair and blanket. Then again at night, in bed with dog, and cat that thinks he's the puppy. Lovely way to end the day.
DISCLAIMER: After reading Nos4a2 in the nest at night, I required an hour of ComedyCentral just so I could actually sleep.

Chris Leanne wrote: "Yep....right with you, mister. In the morning with the Today show in the background, gas fireplace going to cut the chill, cuppa chai, comfy chair and blanket. Then again at night, in bed with dog,..."
I'm currently reading The Fireman as my "night" book. There ARE no nights when I only read for 5 minutes. ALL of them turn into 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, etc etc etc. I am SOOOOOOO tired!!!!! Need to finish this book if I ever want to sleep again!

message 30: by Leanne (new)

Thanks for the warning. It's in my stack.

message 31: by Peter (new)

Peter Melancon My place is at the dining room table under a large bright table lamp. Other places is in my library at the table. It's a cool place that has a ton of books and intresting statues, my fiance calls it the museum. I'm with you except tea is coffee. I have to rad early or I'll get tired and I have other things that need to be done in the day.

message 32: by Eric (new)

Eric Usually I read a book first thing in the morning. It's the only time I tend to have. Still on "The Hideous Strength" by C.S. Lewis (Book 3 of his Space Trilogy). Hope to finish it this weekend!

When I used to travel by train into Chicago, a 300- or 400-page book could be read in under a week. This one I'm reading is taking me into five weeks. Not that it's boring--just have had a full schedule this past month or so, and I'm a morning person!

message 33: by Michelle (new)

Michelle The only place I get time to "read" is in the car.. long commute, most through some beautiful desert in the afternoon.. the clouds can be so lovely and you can see a road that drives on forever in the distance.

I can recall where I was on the road for some compelling scenes.. it is a funny feeling. Audiobooks keep me sane.

message 34: by Roberto (new)

Roberto Napolitano I'm a commuter and I read every day on the train for half an hour. It's my best way to spend time going to work. When I read the other people disappear and the train becomes a very special space for another place

message 35: by Meg (new)

Meg Vernall I read to avoid life and to appreciate life. To find new people to love, hate and admire. The cat is curled in front of the fire having exhausted itself by scratching the new mat to bits, the television humming the news of another disastrous day and, under a lamp to assist bad eyes, I tuck my legs under a gingham nightee and choose my next life to soak into.

message 36: by Sherry (new)

Sherry My favorite place to read is in the car, on a road trip with my husband. I always bring a book we will both enjoy and I read out loud. It's kind of like having your very own personal audio book. It lends itself to some really good conversations. I also enjoy reading when I'm alone in the house in my favorite comfy chair. No TV. No distractions. Just me and my book. I used to love to read in bed, but now, I just get started and I'm out like a light.
I live in a small, rural town, and I enjoy going to our little library to read, as well.

message 37: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Pietro Since having children I long for days I can just sit and ponder over a great book. I would read any where that's quite. Exspecially the library. My mother would always make fun because I wouldn't go anywhere with out a book in my arms. She never understood my fascination with books. My father and I had a special bond when it came to reading. Sitting in his study, books in hand, quietly reading, looking up once in a while to give him a smile.
I still to this day walk around with a book in my bag hoping I can find a quick second to read. Still the library with the kids playing, the laundry mat between washing and folding, or if I'm lucky enough on a warm day taking a stroll through the woods and cuddle under a shady tree. Mostly I just end up laying in bed late at night while my family sleeps book and booklight in hand hoping I can stay awake along enough to finish a chapter.

message 38: by Xander (new)

Xander Cassel In my bed, with the ceiling light off, the desk fan on, and a blanket over me. Runner-up is on a long car trip where I don´t have to drive.

message 39: by Lorenzo (new)

Lorenzo I sit with my daughter as she falls asleep. This should only take, at most, 10 mins but I tend to sit there for much, much longer reading my book.

message 40: by Edward (new)

Edward Burton Laura wrote: "I love reading outdoors when weather permits. In the summer, I often go find a sunny spot outdoors and read with my westie.

I used to enjoy reading at pubs as well, but sheesh, in my neck of the woods they are "bars," and they all host a television screen. Not only are they a distraction to my reading, but they seem to interrupt couples who ostensibly come to converse. Television in bars, it's just one of those things I simply do not get.

message 41: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Lynn For me there's nothing better than reading a book on a rainy day all wrapped up in blankets with a cup of tea or coffee.

message 42: by Glynis (new)

Glynis Saunders Anytime, but mostly late afternoon and evening. Favourite chair, the recliner, cat on my lap snoozing, usually a bit of music softly in the background. Also read on my Kindle on the bus with my earphones in to drown out the background noise.

Edward Burton Jason wrote: "At work while getting paid!!"

Jason, I hear ya! I used to be a security guard, and I would look forward to going to work. One year I knocked out 33 books. Unfortunately, it didn't quite pay enough and I eventually got on with the company I was security for. (Never dreamed I'd work there.) Now I still sit at a desk, but it's hectic. I take a book, but little time for reading. The money makes it worth it, but man, I miss my security guard days.

message 45: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Crawford Many people are able to read under busy conditions - in a doctors waiting room or at home with tv/music blaring and noisy family thumping about. I am NOT one of these people. If I am to read, (and enjoy what I'm reading; As I'm sure we are all wont to do,) I must do so in a quiet, comfortable, low key environment. My favorite time to read is before bedtime. I am a restless sleeper who oft suffers difficulties when attempting to visit the Sandman. I tend to read myself to sleep most nights. Sometimes it takes hours and sometimes it takes minutes, but rest assured, book in hand, I will get there.

message 46: by Toria ~ (new)

Toria ~ Where do I read? I read in the sunroom chair or at the dining room table, sometimes in the local coffeeshop, but my favorite spot is somewhere in the stacks of my local library.

Eric Smith My review of The Fireman:

"Holy smokes, this is one Hell of a great read!

Having read Heart-Shaped Box upon its release and after watching the riveting TV series NOS4A2, I was stunned to learn that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son.

And my Lord, has this man inherited his father's talent!

A post-apocalyptic novel that echoes the themes explored by King in The Stand, The Fireman recounts the journey of nurse Harper Grayson as she survives a post-human world where a mysterious spore induces spontaneous combustion in its victims. Her pregnancy and charming fragility add to the urgency of her story as she joins a society of outcast survivors hiding out from murderous vigilantes intent on purging the world of the infection.

Along the way, Hill adds a subtle homage to his father's Dark Tower series, making a sidelong reference to "remembering the face of his father" - the mantra of the legendary Gunslingers.

This book is absolutely riveting. A waitress I know was about to have a baby and had mentioned her love for King, so I gave her my copy of this to read in the hospital. But I'm definitely going to buy a second copy. This is destined to be a classic of American literature."
