Today I went with my brother and my father to a cattle sale. We went to the sale barn in St. Mary's Kansas to be exact. A trip that took an hour and a half one way. I have to admit that in all the years while I was growing up on the farm, I never went to the sale barns with Dad. I had four brothers and to be honest, I didn't see being a farmer's wife in my future so I didn't mind. I learned several important things at the sale today.
1. The auctioneer is very hard to understand.
2. The baby calves are so cute that you want to take them all home, but you can't.
3. I can't tell a good looking steer from a sorry reject but my brother can and he can tell you within a few pounds how much they weigh.
I won't say I enjoyed myself, but it was interesting to watch the men and women who do know what makes good cattle. I will admit I was surprised by the number of women in the crowd. You go girls. I hope to see a female auctioneer at work one of these days. My ulterior motive in going along was because I plan to have an Amish auctioneer as the hero of my next book. More research is needed.
Do you enjoy auctions? What's the most unusual item you have purchased at an auction?
I have learned NOT to wave to someone across the room, or even nod my head, or I just might buy something that I didn't want! lol
The most unusual thing we have purchased?
We had decided to bid on a baby quilt, for our new great nephew. Someone up front, held up a cute quilt, and shortly after the auctioneer started his chant. My hubby started bidding and it went SO FAST, and he said SOLD...to bidder #...as my hubby held up our bidder number!
Since it was getting about time to leave, I walked over to the cashier to pay for the baby quilt. The lady said "Oh ~ you bought the dogs!" I said no, we bought a baby quilt~ then she proceeded to tell me that they had not sold the baby quilt, because someone got it "out of order", and that they had sold a pair of dogs, instead! I was so shocked ~ And then she said "well, if you don't want the dogs, we can resell them." I excused myself, & said I would have to check with my hubby! When I got back over to where he was sitting, there was a bent-over. very old, cute, little man thanking my hubby for buying his pair of hand carved wooden dogs!!! My hubby was totally confused, but polite, and the little man went on back to his seat!
So, we decided that we didn't want to disappoint the little old man, and that the baby would receive a pair of hand carved wooden dogs, instead of a baby quilt! I went back and paid the cashier, and the story has been told MANY, many times!!!
