Dear readers: I plan on putting my next selection of stories into another ebook which I will be selling for 99c on Smashwords. Because of this, each story will be available for one day ONLY in full. After that you'll have to buy the book to read it. My first book will always be free.

_____________________________ It was 3am. I had instructions to turn up at this house, at this hour, and let myself in through the back door, which would be unlocked. Fred parked up outside the house. There were no signs of anyone being awake.

“Maybe we’ve got the wrong address,” he said, peering at the darkened windows. I pulled out the slip of paper I had written the address down on and double-checked.

“Well, it’s the right one according to this. I’ll go round – if the door’s unlocked, then it’s either the right place, or someone’s been very careless security-wise.”

Fred sighed. I knew he was constantly worried that something would happen to me, but, let’s face it, you can get killed crossing the street. I always took payment in advance so I’ve never been stung with a non-payer. I suppose I could get kidnapped or murdered, but Fred always stayed outside the house to keep watch so I felt safe.

I went down the side of the house, letting myself in by the tall wooden side gate. The wheelie bins sat in a tidy row next to the house wall, the green one overflowing with hedge cuttings. The garden was neat and well-maintained, with a deck area leading to a pair of French doors. I wondered if this was the ‘back door’ I was to use, or if it was the kitchen one. A tabby cat jumped down from the fence and meowed at me. I bent down and stroked it. It rubbed its face against my hand and purred.

Standing up, I tried the handle of the French door. It opened with a slight squeak. The room beyond was dark. I could just make out the shape of a dining table and chairs in the dim light cast by the moon. The cat slid between my feet and purred up at me. I closed the door behind me, hoping the cat lived here.

“Hello?” I whispered, assuming I was expected. Hearing nothing, I tiptoed into the hallway, peering around me. The stairwell was dark. I headed towards the front room, puzzled. Just as I was about to open the door, I heard the tiniest movement behind me. Before I had chance to react, I was seized from behind, a hand over my mouth and another round my waist.

“So, a naughty cat burglar,” a male voice hissed in my ear. This gave me all the clue I needed as to my role here and I relaxed. “Look what I’ve caught,” the voice said and another man came out from the kitchen to examine me. He was young-ish, maybe thirty, average-looking, and wore glasses.

“Very nice,” he said, nodding as he raked me with an assessing glance. “We’re going to have to punish you!” he told me, shaking his head in severity. I wondered if they wanted me to resist. I struggled against the hands holding me – in an instant Glasses grabbed hold of my wrists and spread them wide.

“I’ll scream!” I threatened in a fierce whisper.

The man behind me shushed me. “Don’t want to wake the missus!” he warned. “If you can’t be quiet, I’ll have to gag you.”

“I’ll be quiet,” I stammered, feigning fright.

The two men led me into the front room. The first man, who I hadn’t yet seen, let go of me to switch on a lamp and draw the curtains. He was older than the other man, maybe four or five years. They were alike enough facially to be brothers, but the older one was fatter and balding.

“Well, what shall we do with this very naughty but very sexy burglar?” Glasses said, closing the door and sitting down on the sofa. I stood in front of them and tried to look penitent.
