Finding The Light

One ordinary Friday afternoon my life changed forever. When I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease at the age of 23, I felt my life was over as I knew it. Having being diagnosed with an incurable life-threatening disease is a serious matter. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and wanted to rewind my life to earlier that morning when my life was full of hope for the future.

How do you think you would handle a situation like I was in? It was a surreal time, and I felt sorrowful, disconnected and alone upon hearing the news.

When we receive what seems to be devastating life news, we have a choice moving forward. Will we allow it to consume us or will we stand up and allow the state of mind that nothing is going to stop me, and I'll do whatever I can to overcome this situation.

After a few days of feeling sorry for myself and asking why me, something down deep reared up and said not me, not today not ever! I became a focused man mentally moving forward in the direction of healing and restoration even in the face of an incurable disease.

It was at that moment that I learned to find the light in my situation. I go into this in much greater detail in my new book Gift, Living Inside Out. I thought that if we can find a way to control some aspect of what was going on in my body that I would in a way feel as though I was in control of my destiny and able to fight for it.

Though my renal function was slowly deteriorating, I could help slow the course of destruction by exercise, keeping my blood pressure in check and watching my dietary intake.

Finding a way to control event the smallest part of a life problem will give you a sense of stability and confidence working through the challenge.

Find ways to become a victor not a victim over your situation. Our minds are more powerful that we know. Allow radical thinking to happen. I would visualize myself healed and healthy. Though I would need a kidney transplant or renal dialysis in the future to sustain my life I didn't let those options get me down. I allowed my mind to stay positive about the situation. Whenever a negative or doom and gloom thought would enter into my thoughts, I would use it as a trigger to cancel it out with a positive one.

I believe the choice I made way back when to find the light in my situation and step up and not be a victim saved my life. I also believe that I mentally enabled healing to occur in my body. I know that I was open to overcoming my situation somehow some way even when it seemed there wasn't a way.

What happened during my journey fighting for my life was an incredible set of life-saving lessons that I learned from the inside out and helped me in all I do in life moving forward.
