Up She Rises

An excerpt from Lions of the Empire's upcoming sequel to Beyond the Burning Sea:

Triistan could no longer recall who, but someone had once told him that Aarden meant "Land of Secrets" in one of the old tongues. Since his time exploring the dark interior of that strange country, he had been keeping many of those secrets, and had since discovered that such things were like wild creatures caught in a snare; they scratched and clawed and bit at themselves and their bonds until the snare, or death, set them free. Late on the morning of the thirty-second day since the SKS Peregrine's destruction, Triistan finally succumbed to their will. To Aarden's will. He opened the weathered, cracked skin of his Oath and allowed his fellow survivors to read the pages within, telling them everything, and sparing himself nothing.
He dove headlong into his tale where he had left off: his feverish journey through the sewers of Ostenvaard, strapped to the back of a jharrl, while some terrible illness gnawed away at his insides and caused him to vomit blood several times along the way. By the time they reached their apparent destination, his world had been reduced to the thick, rough fur rubbing his cheek raw, the sting of bile in his throat, the fire in his belly, and the insane hope that the jharrl would eat him and end his misery...
