Publication Day

The Squeeze was published yesterday and I spent the whole day in the car, travelling down from Orkney to Edinburgh, which involved an early and queasy start on 6.30 ferry and then about 8 hours driving - Andrew driving all the way as I seem to have developed a phobia about it. Midnight's Children on the radio all day, as it was 70th anniversary of partition and we listening to what we could when we could pick it up. Not easy in the Highlands. As we drove south all the things I'd forgotten to do (switch off broadband, pick you recharger etc) trickled annoyingly into my head. And the dog looked ill, though actually wasn't. We got home late afternoon to find that my lovely publisher, Salt, had sent me some flowers but, as we weren't there they were at the post office. Picked them up this morning, a bit dried out, but they've perked up now. I haven't seen a copy of the book yet, which is odd as it's for sale and friends have let me know they've got it already! But will see it at Edinburgh Book Festival on Friday where I'll be doing my first event. And then launch next Thursday ... When my first novel was published I woke up on the morning with a beating heart, expecting what? Trumpets? Sky writing? And exactly nothing happened, which is how it really is. Quite relaxed about it by now ...

Cathie Hi Lesley, I thought the publisher sent a number of advance copies to the author?

Lesley Glaister And now the little rumple that is publication has passed and autumn is coming it's lovely to settle back into writing. All summer worked on my YA novel. This I wrote years ago and did have a publisher for, but there's many a slip. And so it hung around in my hard drive for years, almost forgotten, until a conversation with a new publisher, just starting up and looking for a YA novel. And I'm so glad now that it wasn't published before. It really needed a good scrape and polish, a good few kicks and thumps, some cuts and rewrites and new thoughts. The main character has shot up several years in age and understanding, which helps. Need to finish it before next Friday when I am off teaching writing in southern Spain. Another week of summer will be welcome - in Edinburgh cold rain has been lashing the window all day.
