What would you ask for?
"You just need somethin' to aim at," Hetty said to me.
"You sound like my high school guidance counselor," I said. "She said I lacked direction."
She took a discreet sip of coffee.
"Well, maybe I do," I said. "But ... knowing that isn't a lot of help, if you see what I mean."
"I get you," Zao said, "but the plant won't help much with that."
"The plant?"
"Down the street."
"Oh. Yeah."
"I mean," he said, "even if you got someone to give you what you ask for ... and their people are pretty slick that way ... what would you ask for?"
It's a question I've given some thought, not just while writing the book but before and after. If you were going to sell your soul, what would you ask for?

That is such an easy question - if one is unfortunate enough to have a soul and to be in situation when one has to sell it, you sell it for annihilation of your soul.
