Tackle Your TBR Challenge and Giveaway!

My TBR pile is ever growing and this is such a great event to inspire us all to tackle our lists, read more, and enjoy books in general! Of course, with all the wonderful suggestions and giveaways, my pile grows faster than I can read – but that’s part of the fun too.

So the challenge today is to name a book you have always meant to read, but haven’t… And really may not ever get around to reading, if we’re going to be very honest…

Me? Pillars of the Earth. I have heard so many wonderful things about Ken Follet’s story, but its 983 pages have intimidated me completely. Then I went and saw the movie! That’s the worst — for now I feel I know the story and can move on. Yet, as well done as it was, I’m not sure eight episodes adequately covered Follet’s four hundred years and almost a thousand pages of description and development. I use the movie to console myself, however, for I suspect, I’ll never the crack the spine on my long sitting copy…

And, in the spirit of full disclosure… Tolstoy’s War and Peace sits next to it. 1296 pages. Need I say more?

What about you? Please tell me I’m not alone out here…

Leave a comment about the book you’ll probably never read then enter into the giveaway below. I’m giving away two ARCs of The Austen Escape, which releases on November 7th. I promise you it is much shorter than either of the novels mentioned above.

Sonnetta War and Peace

I do not think I will ever read this one. I know people like it but it is still on my kindle TBR

Bonnie "The Outlander" my daughter gave it to me, "you'll love this" but the sheer size is overwhelming & now there are other books in this series!!!

message 3: by Kendra (new)

Kendra I'm currently reading my TBR at a snail's pace, "Gone With the Wind." I'm smitten with the world-building of the South and sauciness but sheesh, it's a long one. At least it's not Ulysses.

I think there are like 8 or something... Many many books! :)

So true... I've never read that one. Again... Saw the movie. :) I know that doesn't count at all...

Monique Definitely agree with you about War & Peace. And I'll agree with the others about Outlander. I watch the TV show. Totally counts, right? Right?! Please say, yes.

I'll add as my offering Les Miserables. I love to read. Love it! But 1,200 odd pages is daunting to say the least. Maybe one day when I have the time, patience, and fortitude. Right now with littles in the house, it's just not happening.

message 8: by Becky (new)

Becky Vanity Fair. It is on my shelf just in case I get everything else read in my TBR file or I decide I really need to read a classic.

That is such a great play -- and the movies!! I've always wondered if I might read it too, but I'm in your camp... Plays and movies absolutely count. :)

Good one.... Never read it. Good BBC miniseries, but never cracked the book open.

Amy Leigh Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley
The sequel to Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Because I've started it many times in the past 17 years and I still haven't read it.
Of Metal and Wishes (Of Metal and Wishes, #1) by Sarah Fine
This one is an idk. I accidentally bought it on Amazon after falling asleep while browsing books with the one click option and while it looks interesting I think I'm more pissed off that Amazon charged me full price and overdrafted my account for a book I had never heard of.

message 12: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie What's the name of the book & author?

message 13: by Amy Leigh (new)

Amy Leigh Of Metal and Wishes by Sarah Fine

message 14: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Sounds good, but Amazon would probably take it back!

message 15: by Amy Leigh (new)

Amy Leigh They wouldn't & it was digital. Because it overdrafted my account instead of using the $50 Amazon gift card I already had on my account it locked my account from buying anything and Amazon wouldn't let me use my giftcard. It was a very frustrating experience!

message 16: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie That sounds like somebody screwed up royally!

message 17: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Reay There is nothing good about that. I'm so sorry...

message 18: by Amy Leigh (new)

Amy Leigh Thank you but it's okay, I'll never fall asleep with Amazon open ever again!

message 19: by Heather (new)

Heather The Iliad and The Odyssey. I've read abridged versions, but the idea of the unabridged ones scares me for some reason, despite having read War and Peace and Les Miserables (which was excellent!).

Very wise advice for us all. :)

Oh... Another vote for Les Miserables. I may have muster up the courage. :) Thanks!

L.A. If you tackle Les Mis, maybe my mental trick will help. Les Mis is divided into 5 sections, so I treated each like a separate novel in a five book series, allowing myself to read other things along the way. I also bought the Julie Rose translation with lots of notes in the back to help me with the French history. By not giving myself a deadline for reading the entire work at once, I was able to relax and enjoy it as the story unfolded. Hope this helps if it's on your to-read list.

That's fantastic advice, L.A. and I really appreciate it. It is on my list and now may not get moved off. It has always intrigued but there is constantly other reading that gets bumped above the commitment I know Les Mis will take.

Thanks!
