Thor: Ragnarok Review

Let me begin on what I thought of the first Thor movies. In 2011, we were introduce to the Thunder god where he was banished for his arrogance in attacking the Frost Giants. For me, the movie was a bit underwhelming but found it enjoyable nonetheless mostly because due to Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Loki. Two years later, Thor returned where he faced-off against Malekith, who was shadowed by Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. Thor: The Dark World was better than Thor, but I still felt underwhelmed by it. Can the third installment go on a high-note or continue it’s streak?

It starts out with Thor captured by Surtur, who tells our hero about Ragnarok while slowly being spun around. For a short time, I found this funny but after spinning three times, it grew tiresome. And that perfectly sums up my feelings about this third movie. There is way too much comedy for me to say it’s a masterpiece. That said, I did enjoy most of it.

Thor finding out Loki is alive in Asgard and going back to earth to find Odin was hilarious. Thor vs Hulk was amazing. Hulk finally talking is great. Hela returning and crushing Mjolnir was still very shocking even though we seen it in the trailers. Pretty much most of the first two acts were enjoyable. However, by the third act, I grew completely bored. Everything became predictable and the final shot ended so abruptly. Even the two post-credit scenes weren’t satisfying.

Honestly, Thor: Ragnarok is more disappointing than Captain America: The First Avenger. I suspect if you’ve loved the previous Thor movies, you’ll love this one as well, but for me, I did not love this franchise. I love Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal as Thor in the Avenger’s films and cameo in Doctor Strange, and he definitely has great comedic timing, but I’m glad that he part of the Avengers rather than leading his own franchise.
