Author as Reader

It is the last day of November, 2017, and I have just joined the Goodreads community. Filling out some of the information has caused me to reflect on my most recently read books; an interesting experience, to say the least.

It seems that I have been drawn to biographies of late, especially autobiographies of sing-songwriters. That's not too surprising, really, since that has been my own hobby-avocation since my early teen years, and the three autobiographies were of composers and performers I have admired since those teen years: Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, and Bruce Springsteen.

What was surprising to me has been how well these were all written and how much I enjoyed reading them. There was a depth to each of them that kept me engaged. All three were an excellent read.

And now, I continue the focus on biography with Chris Matthews' new book, Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit. I just picked it up today and look forward to reading it. I greatly admired this man. Like so many of my generation, the assassinations of John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr. will ever be burned into my memory.

I doubt there is anyone around my age or older who cannot tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing on November 22, 1963, when they first heard of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It is so vivid in my own memory that I will be basing the opening of my second novel on that exact experience. But more on that later.

It's good to be with you as part of the Goodreads community.
