Partial Brain Transplant

Former Vice President Joe Biden famously had hair transplant plugs, but suppose we could give politicians brain plug transplants?

We've done it with rats, so why not politicians? Apologies for the cynicism (some of my best friends are politicians), but in fact, scientists have transplanted human brain cells into rats.

The human brain cells were developed from stem cells as lentil sized neurons. Recent papers presented at the Society for Neuroscience report that the cells connected to the blood vessels of rats and mice and began to send out axons that carry signals from one cell to another.

These small clumps of brain cells are called "organoids". George Church's Harvard Med School lab has grown them in vitro with blood supplies. To grow whole organs is now a real possibility along with implanting brain plugs in humans to restore or enhance mental abilities--including sight, sound, touch, and intelligence.

Christof Koch, president of the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle says, “The science is advancing so rapidly, the ethics can’t keep up.” Neither can politicians or even philosophers.
