Christmas Sermon Toolbox
No time of year is harder for preaching than Christmas. Here are a few reasons why that is – and what you can do about it.
Watch this 14-minute talk I gave on Facebook LIVE last week, filled with Christmas sermon planning aids:
Reasons it is difficult:
1:20 | There isn’t nearly the amount of material available (Matthew, Luke, John, Isaiah, Micah) centered on the Christmas story.
2:30 | There is an expectation of emotion through the culture – songs/music, experience, etc.
3:50 | People are distracted.
4:15 | People’s familiarity with the Christmas message.
Suggestions:
4:45 | Exposition: give a sermon expositing Matthew 2 and teach the whole thing.
5:15 | Characters: give a sermon focused on the individual characters.
6:15 | Apologetics: give a sermon about the reasons people refute Christmas.
6:30 | Themes: give a sermon that can have an easy application to Christmas.
BONUS: Watch this short Christmas joke you can use in your sermon from Pastor James MacDonald:
