Penance
Spotify is by default set to "share," which means it'll let your Facebook friends or Spotify followers know exactly what song you're listening to at that moment. The idea of the internet sharing, by default, moments--like listening to, say, Steely Dan on your headphones while your partner snores on the mattress next to you--that feel intimate, or at least personal, is kind of horrifying to me. It's one of the things that chased me off of Facebook, and has kept me off of Twitter and most other social media--I'm totally pro at oversharing in person, but to do so on the internet, where people's responses to my poor judgment will be recorded FOR LIFE, is just not something I have the constitution to handle.
But, I like to think I have better judgment when it comes to books than with late-night listening. And I acknowledge that I'm a selfish Goodreads user: for years I've logged on to read what people have to say about books I'm considering reading, or have read, and yet I seldom contribute. So I decided to write some short reviews of some of my favorite (fiction) books of the year--they weren't all released in the last year, though most are within the past few. It's also not a comprehensive list, more like a compilation of the ones most fresh in my mind, either because I read the most recently or because I've talked about them with others most frequently. In alphabetical order by author, I've got:
Marlena
The Story of a New Name - This is meant as a stand-in for the entire Neopolitan quartet
Homegoing
Deceit and Other Possibilities
Little Fires Everywhere
The Animators
I'll likely recall all the other significant past-year titles on my reading list as soon as I hit "publish," but that's my start. There are a bunch of coming-in-2018s that I'm super excited about, too, so hopefully I'll stop being such a Goodreads parasite and share the love.
