GENERAL MOSQUITO
This article is not about a certain politician who goes by that nickname. It is about the real thing; that flying insect who disturbs your sleep at night and gives you malaria. The reason I have added the title general is because it was really that insect which led our fight against colonial rule. Independence for this country Ghana and I believe other parts of Africa was not won solely by the liberation fighters but also by a loss of will by the colonialist to occupy territories because of the harsh conditions imposed because of the scourge of the malaria parasite. Years ago, West Africa was described as the whiteman's grave.
Somewhere in 1824, British forces decided to invade Ashanti and impose British rule. When the King of Ashanti heard it, he was said to have remarked, "so the white man has decided to bring his cannon to the bush but the bush is stronger than the cannon."
The Ashantis just laid in ambush and waited for the British to advance deep into the jungle. Then the rains started and the British were bogged down in the marshes. The mosquitoes also started biting and soon about 80% of the British troops were down with malaria. That is when the Ashantis attacked in a swift pincer move. The British governor Sir Charles McCarthy was captured and beheaded by the jubilant Ashanti troops. After that it took another 50 years before the British embarked upon another adventure to try and bring Ashanti under their rule. Even that did not last because of the harsh conditions of the jungle and they quickly withdrew to the safety of the coast. It was not until 1901 that Ashanti eventually fell to British forces and the king exiled to the Seychelles Island in the Atlantic.
To cut a long story short there is a West African proverb. "If you think you are too small to make a difference, you have never had a night with a mosquito."
Looking at the planet in general I understand that the F.B.I. have confirmed sightings of U.F.Os that they have been investigating for years. If there are really aliens from outer space attempting to invade the planet, just like the role mosquitoes played in defeating British forces in Ashanti these aliens will also encounter all the vermin on this planet that we find distasteful at the moment. They will encounter the common flu, swine flu, bird flu, ebola AIDS, Hepatitis, anthrax and numerous other vermin and they will succumb. We may not need to fire a shot in the defense of the planet.
