Chapter 1 – Restless Heart
Dain dropped into a crouch and slammed his back against the nearest wall. His heart hammered in his chest, a relentless beat that was almost painful even as it produced a rush of adrenaline that he relished for its recent rarity. The sun slanted angrily through the window, reflecting off of several surfaces and piercing his eyes with sharp brilliance. The young warrior shifted to remove his eyes from the path of the glare, blinking in an effort to clear the white spots from his vision. The intruder would escape if he weren’t more careful. He couldn’t let that happen. He wouldn’t.
A flash of movement caught his eye and Dain followed it with a quick gaze. A small grin turned up one corner of his mouth. Found you. His target stilled, daring to scan the room in search of a pursuer. Dain remained motionless, undetected, and the intruder took another cautious step. It was time to close in. Dain calculated the target’s progress and eyed the path he would have to take in order to make the capture. A table stood in his way, littered with a variety of items used for cooking—the wooden bowl on its corner would come in handy. A chair sat at an angle several feet away, perfect for an overhead launch.
With the intruder’s focus settled once more on traveling the length of the far wall, Dain sprang
up and shot forward. Sparing no time for second thoughts, his body followed a pattern mapped out by instinct. His right boot planted itself on the chair a mere moment before his left found the near edge of the table, and then he threw himself forward in a flip. As his body sailed over the table’s surface, his right hand secured the wooden bowl in a solid grip. He tucked for a crouch and then his left hand shot out, bracing against the floor for balance as his feet landed with a soft thud. The intruder barely had time to lift a startled gaze before the wooden bowl came down over his head.
Over all of him, really. Dain blinked, pleased to note that the bowl had indeed been large enough to completely trap his prey.
A large and rather ugly loam-rat.
