The Cricketer
A Canadian in God's Own Country: Rambling, Umpiring and Golfing in North Yorkshire is a book about many things. My first.
It's up to me to get it out there. I am trying to sell 100 copies across North Yorkshire by the end of April, while writing a second one, and a new book about the iconic South African fighter Helen Joseph.
Hoppers the local bookstore in Malton bought 4 copies.
I've dropped off copies in stores in villages around North Yorkshire. It's weird and amusing at the same time.
The Cricketer Magazine likes it, as in
" A Canadian in God’s Own Country: Rambling, Umpiring and Golfing in North Yorkshire (Sixth Element Publishing/robinbenger.com) features some interesting cricket tales. Author Robin Benger was born in Buckinghamshire, raised in South Africa, and worked in Canadian journalism and documentary film-making since 1976. He found himself yearning for his beloved game and ‘home’, so in 2017 retired and moved into a caravan in North Yorkshire. In Bill Bryson style he recounts various travels around the county, including a memorable clash with the Greatest Living Yorkshireman himself, a certain Mr Boycott."
A Canadian woman who lives in one of the villages was so excited to see the words "A Canadian in North Yorkshire" she sent me a lovely email.
A reader in Newfoundland loves the writing and the sense of humour.
BBC Radio is going to interview me about the book on April 7th.
But the big bookstores locally don't make any decisions about what to stock in their outlets, referring me to head office, which is a machine and a form.
Its an insight into the parlous state of the book game , and I guess, the place of reading.
Still, onwards.
