THIEVING

My friend emailed me yesterday to let me know someone was selling a $7.99 Nook version of Stockholm Syndrome on the B&N website. I didn't upload it, or give permission for anyone else to upload it, so I'm kind of furious and not sure what to do. It's not the money - I don't give a hoot about making any profit from this, the books have always been available to download for free from Lulu.com anyway. I just violently object to anybody ELSE making a profit from the dirty stories I wrote to amuse my friends. I've emailed their customer services to ask them to remove the book and investigate who's behind it, because (I may be wrong) I think they'll have needed their bank details to sign up? I've heard nothing back yet, but I hope they're on it.

Carole-Ann Hope you get some kind of recompense - if just an apology !

Hugs*

Dani Alexander >8( This is disgusting. I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope they give you the information, but they might not due to privacy laws. They'll probably just remove the book. I'm not sure what else you can do to get the name.

Blargh that sucks so much though.

Casey Cox This has just happened to me, with someone selling one of my Free Reads on Amazon.

Amazon responded within 24 hrs and have removed it from sale. Unfortunately no details were passed on as to the persons involved. Whether Amazon take up a case against them or just cancel their account, I don't know.

I guess if I went at it with a lawyer they would have to release the info but as long as it's been removed I'm happy to leave it at that.

It does, however, leave me mindful and more aware for the future.

I hope you get yours sorted and removed as quickly from B&N.

Carole-Ann Thinking back on this, and referring to Casey (and a couple of other people who were unfortunate as well), there would appear to be rather a lot of leeway at Amazon/B&N etc as to who sells books there.

Shouldn't there be some kind of check on who is submitting books to be sold? Or am I being too naive (as usual)?

I abhor any form of cheating, and this is so repugnant to me that I'm more than prepared to go into battle (with words of course ) against the big corporations etc, so that I can stand up for some of my fave authors!!

I promise to keep a look out in the future for any of these nasty people!

*hugs* to Richard and Casey

J.D. Tyler Richard, I want to read your Stocklholm trilogy, but I went to LuLu.com to download your books, they aren't listed as free--the ebooks are $7.74 and paperback is listed at $18.58 (rather odd pricing, I thought). I don't mind paying at all, in fact I expect to, but only if it's legit and you as the author are getting that money! Please advise, because I really want to read the series. :)

Richard Rider Sorry I'm so late replying, work has been crushing me and I'm just getting to catch up on stuff now! Thanks for all the support :)

J.D. - they're probably funny numbers because of the £ to $ exchange rate (I'm in the UK). I've put a £5 charge on the pdfs for now because there have been other people selling the files on various sites and I'm trying to figure out whether there's a way of stopping that. Probably not... it's difficult to police what you're handing out free on the internet. The charge should at least stop some people from downloading the files unless they genuinely want to read the stories, though. FRUSTRATING!

Shannon Is there anyplace besides LuLu to purchase your books. I can't download adobe on my apple computer or ipad. It seems that's the only format available. Is that correct?

message 9: by Richard (new)

Richard Rider Hi Shannon - sorry you're having trouble with the files! A lot of people have been saying the same thing lately, so I'm going to fix it as soon as I get a spare minute to teach myself proper e-book formats. I never really advanced that far beyond quills and parchment, I'm a massive dunce about technology stuff so it never occurred to me that the files might not work on some readers. If I remember correctly, a few years ago when I first put the paperbacks on Lulu you could just click a thing that let people download the source file as well, and that's really where I left it.

So yeah - thanks for pointing it out, I'm going to fix this as soon as I get time :)

Shannon Thanks for the reply. With the way the groups talk about your books, I'm sure they'll go nut when they realize they may be able to download them on their nook, kindle or ipad. I am also a computer dunce, so I know exactly what you mean. Let me know what you find out and I'll spread the word!

message 11: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Shannon and Richard, I figured it out for me (since I had emailed Richard earlier). Shannon, if you want to download on your ipad you need Bluefire software I believe. Try different servers to download such as Safari, Internet Explorer, etc b/c software sometimes apparently won't install depending on what you are using. I needed Adobe Digital Editions and could never get it to download through Google Chrome, but as soon as I tried Internet Explorer it worked immediately. Hopefully, that will help you!

Shannon I'll give it a try Jenn. Thanks!
