Ending a story

Sometimes when I write, I come up with ideas about new characters and plots that would work great later in the series. Often, I am eager to introduce them in earlier books as a hint or early introduction and them flesh them out in detail down the line.

But what if they affect a novels ending? I have re-written the ending to Red Wizard of Atlantis a few times now as I struggle with this notion. I can end it with a climactic event that finishes the story cleanly, or add in another subplot and character that alters the ending and portends something to follow later. Kind of a cliffhanger, I suppose.

What do you think?
