His breathing evened out and he flipped her so she was on top which left him framing her face as he gently wiped a tear from her cheek. “Did you mean it?”
Her mind was spinning faster than the room. “What?”
“You said you loved me. Did you mean it or was it the alcohol talking.”
He’d just given her the way out. She could blame everything on the tequila. Staring down at him, she was prepared to do just that and she would have if she hadn’t recognized the pain in his eyes. He knew she wasn’t lying and she didn’t want to hurt him that way because she did love him, damn it. So now he’d just have to deal with it. He was the one that started all of this in the first place. If he got hurt down the road, it‘d be his own fault.
“God help you, Ryan Rose, I mean it. I love you.”
He rolled her to the side and climbed out of bed, grabbing the bottle from the table. “This calls for a celebration.”
She took a swallow and he took a gulp. “We need to shower before we go.”
“What? You can’t possibly be thinking of going to the show now?”
“No. I’m thinking of finding a wedding chapel. They have several here.”
She didn’t understand. “Why do you want to visit wedding chapels?”
“To get married, of course.” She gulped at the realization when he dropped to his knee beside the bed. “Emily Winters, please marry me.”
“Oh my God. Ryan, we can’t. We’re too drunk.”
“There’s no law against getting married drunk, I think. But just to be safe we better not tell them.” He was grinning like a fool.
She had to change his mind. “Come back to bed. We’ll sleep it off and talk about it in the morning.”
Ryan motioned to the clock radio. “It is morning. C’mon Em. Let’s do it. Please?”
“Okay. We’ll take a shower then if you still want to, we’ll go.” She’d seduce him into a bout of shower sex and pray between that and the cold water she’d hit him with in the end, he’d agree to wait until morning. When he woke up sober he’d thank her for saving him from making a huge mistake.
Before she knew it he had her in his arms, carrying her to the bathroom. “You won’t regret this, Em. I promise to make you happy for the rest of our lives.”
The shower sex and cold water had the opposite effect Emily’d hoped for. Instead of making Ryan too tired, or clearing his mind enough to see this as a drunken mistake, he was more excited than ever. And worse, the tender way he’d taken her in the shower increased her feelings for him. He was a good man. He believed he loved her and she now believed she loved him, too. Whatever happened in the future they just have to face together as man and wife.
Standing there in Ryan’s fleece wasn’t exactly the way she imagined her wedding, but when the director of Harvey’s wedding chapel asked her if she’d love, honor and cherish Ryan til death do they part, she shouted I do. And Tequila or not, she meant every word.
