Distracted Quiet

I find myself in complete silence for the first time in at least three years; my daughter napping, son at a sleepover, husband not yet home from work. It is the perfect time to get some work done myself. Except, I am writing this blog post when I should be writing for my client. With this much quiet, it’s hard to keep from getting distracted and doing the million other things I’d like to do.

First, of course, I cleaned up and started packing up Christmas stuff before diving into my work.

This blog post about distraction caught my attention when I realized I am sitting here listening to a zombie serial podcast We’re Alive and leisurely playing the walking dead social game while writing an in-depth 2,000-word article for a construction company. Mostly I am researching and answering questions for my piece before I can actively write it.

I’d love to say that for every word I write for money, I write one for myself. But, that doesn’t always happen. 2000 words is a lot of words to write for someone else. ‘So why do it?’ You’re asking.

I’m a content writer. I earn money writing content for individuals and small businesses from blog posts and articles to business related projects and website copy.

It’s a great experience. Writing content for others means learning how to write concise, clear copy according to a strict creative brief and provides endless opportunity to refine not only my writing skills but my editing skills too (which I know can still use some work).

I enjoy learning and content writing provides endless opportunity for learning new things and understanding the world around me.

At least I’ve completed the research and put some words down, but now I hear the stirring in the monitor. Time to put the mom hat back on.

Hey, moms! What are the ways you spend quiet time in your home? And career moms! How do you keep from getting distracted? Let’s have a conversation–leave a comment below.
