Friendship
I know your strengths,
the way you make me laugh,
I sense your steps-
bare-footed-
on life’s paths.
See how you walk,
I’d know it again, I’m sure,
on deserted platforms
of stations
from before.
I hear your voice,
the wisdom that you speak,
in those soft notes
that always let me breathe.
Silences between us
speak of you and I
the timelessness of us,
no matter what comes by.
In your older glances,
I see the younger girl,
dark-haired and exotic,
you came from another world.
I wept, and you understood me,
the loss was also yours;
we faced death and it’s cruelty
before we were unfurled.
Clung together at the bus-stop,
clung together at home,
fought each others battles;
brought scars and trophies home.
Gossiped about outsiders
who were not you or I,
talked of those beside us -
didn’t notice Time go by.
I see your faults, invisible
to them.
I feel you with my heart,
hide weaknesses and pain.
I see your face, whether laughing or in tears;
the knowledge of your friendship
always quells my fears.
Your triumphs and joys are mine,
your sorrows and mistakes.
Sometimes, I wish I were
better,
yet, I offer you myself.
I offer you my ears,
which yearn to understand.
The same oe’r passing years -
it’s always common ground.
This journey of life is ours;
this fragile life we have -
hold it in your hands
I’ll bless the dreams you have.
And as we sit together
in some little street cafe
we’ll always share our hopes, and plans,
tomorrow - every day.
the way you make me laugh,
I sense your steps-
bare-footed-
on life’s paths.
