Not a fan of formula books that are so obvious you can figure out the bad character in the first few chapters. It would not be fun for me as a writer to know myself what was going to happen ahead of time, like those readers who are compelled to read the last chapter first.

That's why I avoid the trap of outlining my stories before they are written. I pick a subject and a dark event, stage the characters with their own unique personalities and quirks, then allow the story to develop along the way.

That's also why my readers are often blown away by the ending, even though when they think back through the story, it makes perfect sense.
