Blurbs and Covers
I'm in the midst of soliciting blurbs and editing the cover copy for my new book. This is always an exciting time in the publication process, the final touches on a long and exhilarating roller-coaster. It's also making me think of books that contain some of my favourite cover copy and blurbs.
For me, the king of cover copy is Dave Barry. From Dave Barry Hits Below the Beltline: "Sensing the need for a thoughtful, balanced book to explain our deeply troubling national policital process, Dave Barry has not even come close." From Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need: "Air Travel (Or: Why Birds Never Look Truly Relaxed)". His covers make me laugh as much as his books.
And the crown for blurbs goes hands-down to my other comedy idol, Tina Fey. The wonderful endorsements for the brilliant Bossypants include "Totally worth it," from Trees, "I hope that's not really the cover. That's really going to hurt sales" from her dad, and, best of all, "Hilarious and insightful. Laugh-out-loud funny - oh no, a full moon. No! Arrgh! Get away from me! Save yourself!" from A Guy Turning Into a Werewolf.
What appears on the cover should reflect what appears between the pages. Thanks for the lessons, Dave and Tina!
