“You know,” said Paul, “there are those pictures, I think they’re called stereograms or something like that, where they have hidden objects. They don’t look like much, just some color blotches or a pattern of lines and dots. But if you look into a picture like that long enough, you start seeing things. Like a fish swimming or a whole city.”

“I think I’ve seen those,” I said.

“Yeah. So when you see that fish, it becomes the most important part of the picture. No, actually, it’s more than that. You understand that the fish is the picture. Everything else—all those color blotches and lines and dots—are there to hide it. But also to make it real. So everything else is like a frame. What matters is the fish. But once you have found it, you know what the worst thing is? You cannot unsee it.”

He looked at me and for the first time I saw in full clarity what had been lurking under the ever-smiling face and endless jokes.

“Now I see it everywhere,” Paul said. “Well, there isn’t much to see around here, but just think for a moment about the normal world.”

“That’s exactly why they don’t want us to think about the normal world,” I said.
